Webmoney in Pakistan: An Overview on Safety & Availability

History of Webmoney

In 1998, as the Russian Ruble went through a devaluation crisis, the Russian government devised a system to transfer and hold dollars through proper channels, as the use of the US Dollar was increasing day by day.

And thus, Webmoney was born. A funds transfer service similar to Western Union at the time, it grew quickly in Eastern Europe. And soon, they grew their operation to the rest of Europe.

As technology advanced, and the use of digital currencies grew, Webmoney adapted, and today the main service they offer is a digital wallet to transfer and store money in.

Today, the best way to describe Webmoney would be a mix between PayPal and Western Union.

How It Works

The way Webmoney works is a bit different from other similar services in the sense that Webmoney doesn’t store your funds directly in a fiat currency form, like USD or EUR.

Instead, it stores your money in ‘purses’, each purse is designated to a different currency. And in each purse, the funds are stored in ‘WMZ’ which is short for Webmoney Unit. Webmoney Units are virtual units that represent a converted form of the funds that you have deposited and are backed by what’s known as ‘guarantors’. They ensure that the Webmoney Units have the value that they have.

The way to use Webmoney has been kept relatively simple, in the sense that you have to just make an account and then choose the purse corresponding to the currency that you prefer and then start using it.

Though that comes with a limit of funds that you can send/receive. But you can easily unlock that by verifying your identity.

Availability

Webmoney has been available to the general public for over two decades. Its availability has just grown throughout the years to the point where today it is seen as a direct competitor to Western Union and PayPal.

The availability by region has differed in the past, though today it is pretty much available anywhere.

As PayPal has become a global service, people in the West have mainly come to rely on it for funds transfer, due to its ease of use and simplicity

But in the East, due to the fact that the service was born in Russia, and due to proximity, Webmoney has become a very popular option to store and transfer money.

In recent years, despite many tries, Pakistan has failed to bring the service of PayPal into Pakistan’s region due to numerous factors. That unavailability of PayPal, combined with the fact that Pakistan has a burgeoning freelancing industry that is relying more and more on international clients means that Pakistani freelancers and traders have come to rely on Webmoney as a service. Its availability in the region has been an inlet/outlet for cash flow. The effect of which has been that, to transfer payments, even western countries have started to use Webmoney too. Although, the market in the West is still dominated by PayPal.

Another reason for the preference in the East is due to the fact that Western Union, while reliable, has a transfer fee that can put some people off.

Pakistanis particularly rely on Webmoney due to the fact that it has become a convenient outlet to directly transfer money to their local digital wallets.

Safety & Reliability

When it comes to safety, Webmoney is a fairly reliable platform for financial transaction services.

While the security that PayPal and Western Union provide in transactions is enviable, Webmoney is no slouch either. But it has, in the past, and still continues to deal with unreliable customers.

When it comes to reliability, it’s a relatively straightforward platform that is more than reliable when it comes to transferring funds and the availability of services.

But when it comes to identity verification, it has hit some snags in the past. Due to the fact that it only asks you to verify your identity only if you want to send or receive money over a certain amount and not as a whole overall, it’s dealt with some unsavory characters in the past.

But that has been rare. Still, one must exercise precaution when it comes to transferring money.

Conclusion

All in all, Webmoney has been a more than reliable service throughout the  years. And it certainly can’t be treated as just a substitute to PayPal and Western Union. It has many advantages and services of its own that you can’t get from the other two services.

Webmoney is definitely a reliable platform, especially for Pakistanis, due to its wide range of utilities and the fact that its use is increasing slowly in the West too, showing that, while PayPal is still would be an incredibly useful resource to have in Pakistan, Webmoney can more than do the job for the time being basically the same kind of convenience and reliability.
